TLC Mourns the Loss of Richard Dean, Fashion Photographer and Cover Shot Co-Host

Legendary fashion photographer Richard Dean passed away December 27, after a brief illness. Based in New York, Dean worked worldwide in both advertising and editorial with clients, including Giorgio Armani, Gianni Versace, Yves St. Laurent, Reebok, Nike, Fujifilm, Beck's Beer, Miller Beer, Michelob Beer, Fila, Champion, Playboy, TV Guide, FHM Sport, Cosmopolitan and Harper's Bazaar.

He began his fashion career fifteen years ago in front of the camera as a model, but his love for photography soon pushed him behind the lens and into a thriving and successful career. Dean's photography blended a unique style of digital capture, and often included digital compositing along with vivid colors, movement, energy and emotion. It was that signature style, along with his big personality, good heart and dashing looks that brought him to the attention of Cover Shot producers. In helping turn "supermoms" into "supermodels," Richard's keen eye, radiant smile and gentle demeanor helped countless women discover their inner and outer beauty throughout the production process and his was a role he cherished.

"Richard's energy, creativity and sheer commitment to his work was incomparable. He embodied the spirit of Cover Shot so fully — helping to pick people up who felt that maybe some of the color in their lives had faded," said David Abraham, Executive Vice President and General Manager, TLC. "The final scene of each show, when he revealed the billboard of each woman's 'supermodel' look was always a moment of colorful and unforgettable TV magic. He will be dearly missed and always remembered."

Pamela Deutsch, Executive Producer of Cover Shot for TLC, said "Richard often spoke of the women we profiled on Cover Shot with great admiration, inspired by their stories of strength and survival. In the end, when his own resolve was tested, these same women rallied around him to return some of his special magic. I will always remember Richard as an effervescent person. His passion, drive, commitment and generosity deeply touched those who knew him. He not only leaves a legacy of great beauty with his work but also with his gentle spirit. I will miss my dear friend and colleague."

In addition to his work on Cover Shot, Dean was also featured as a guest celebrity judge on the UPN's America's Next Top Model with Tyra Banks and, cinematically, co-starred opposite two-time Golden Globe nominee Maria Bello. In lieu of flowers, Richard's family has asked that donations be made in his name to the Pancreatic Cancer Society. Memorial services will be held for Richard in Bethesda, MD on January 13 and in New York on January 27.
