Country Kitsch Carnage

Original airdate: Jan. 29, 2005

Janice decorated her Victorian home with pride — but new owners Brooke and Mark have removed and remodeled all her Victorian touches, which they describe as "country kitsch meets Goodwill." Brooke and Mark put their hearts into renovating their old home, but new owners Katie and Mike think the workmanship is "shoddy" and plan to redo all the DIY work and give it a more professional finish. How will the old owners handle the changes when they return to view their once beloved homes?

Family A — Katie & Mike
Katie and Mike have been dating for five years. The couple are buying their first home together. They don't quite see eye to eye about what belongings they should merge together in the new house. Katie doesn't like Mike's clutter and wants it all reassigned to the basement. Mike doesn't agree. He works in the building industry and has big plans for the new house. Katie is a hairdresser, and although she will stay clear of the actual physical renovations, she prides herself on her ability to "shop until she drops" for their new furnishings. The two are perfectionists and don't like the DIY-standard workmanship from the previous homeowners. They want their new home to look "professional and classy" and do not want any of their renovations to look like they did it themselves.

Family B — Brooke & Mark
Brooke and Mark have decided to buy a larger, four-bedroom Victorian house for their growing family. Tensions mount as they suffer the stress of moving with a 2-year-old toddler and a 3-week-old baby while trying to complete major house renovations! They hate the taste of the former owner (described as "country kitsch meets Goodwill") and can't wait to completely transform their new home to make it their own style. Brooke and Mark's projects include gutting the kitchen and installing their $50,000 dream kitchen.

Family C — Janice & her son Christian
Janice has recently adopted a 5-year-old boy. With her elder son recently leaving home, Janice has decided to move to release the equity in her home for her exciting new future. She put her heart and soul into decorating her "authentic Victorian-style" home (with lots of pansies and frill) and is having a tremendous amount of separation anxiety about leaving it. Janice is proud of how she left the house. How will she react when she sees that Brooke and Mark have completely gutted it?
