The Drifters

Original Airdate: July 27, 2004

It's the cutting-edge sport that everyone is talking about. Rear-wheel-drive cars that dance across the arena, judged like Olympic skaters as they slide, glide and drift from one full stadium to the next. The sport is drifting, and Rides will build, test and enter top drifting cars into this crowded circuit of high-speed grace. We'll trace this growing movement from its Japanese origins, seeing how drifting has single-handedly revived the rear-drive compacts of yesteryear.

Working with top drifting champions of the moment, Rides will also explore the entire subculture at work within this new and exciting sport. We'll watch two drifting teams gear up for the D-1 Competition. One car comes to us by way of Toshi Hayama, vice president of Apex USA, a company that builds some of the world's top drifting cars. The other car belongs to champion rally-car driver Rhys Millen. Once the cars are built, we'll see the test days, the crashes and the whole lifestyle surrounding drifting.
