Q: What was it like being filmed 24/7, knowing that your words and actions were being monitored?
A: Being filmed 24/7 was quite an experience. In the beginning of the week we were very aware of the cameras, but by the end of the week they were just part of the house. Although we tried to be ourselves, we were aware that we were on camera at all times. There were times we would be engaged in a conversation and forget about the cameras until the one across the room turned to focus on us. Overall we were comfortable with the cameras and the filming process.
Q: Were there any cultural differences in working with Dr. Tanya and the production crew that you needed to overcome?
A: Everyone was quite friendly and considerate to our situation. Dr. Tanya was wonderful in adapting to us.
Q: What was the most memorable moment during your week in the house?
A: To pick one moment as the most memorable is very difficult. The entire week was memorable, but if I have to choose, it would be when Dr Tanya showed me how I “ruined” Joe’s time-out for Justin by babying him. It was important for me and my family to learn it is OK for Justin to cry when he is naughty and being disciplined. As much as it tears at my heart, I need to bite my tongue and let him learn he is not the boss.
Q: What is the biggest lesson that you learned from Dr. Tanya? Have you seen a difference in your family structure and your relationship with your children since the show?
A: The biggest lesson I learned is that Justin really did think he was the boss. The most difficult thing I learned is that Justin took on this role because we let him. He tried to be the adult because this was his way of keeping the peace in the house. I have seen a positive change in Justin since the show. He is having fun just being a kid and a big brother. We are able to understand some of his behaviors more now that we did not before. Now that we understand, he isn’t so confused.
Q: Overall, what do you think of the experience?
A: The experience was one that we will never forget. We did find it difficult to implement some of the things we learned while we were there to “real” life. Every day is a learning experience, but we do find ourselves questioning, “What would Tanya say”?
Q: Has your life changed since filming the show? If yes, then how?
A: Our life has changed in the way that we understand now what we were dealing with. We learned a lot from Dr. Tanya and the other families. We were given the tools, and it is up to us to use them. Knowing we aren’t the only parents dealing with these issues is a comfort. We hope our story will help other families like ours.
