type size: [A] [A] [A]

Take Into Account Your Child's Age
* Babies do not realize they are separate beings from you.
* Until 3 years old your child's brain is not fully formed.
* Toddlers play up because they are trying to find their identity.
* If under 3 years old, show rather than tell a child what to do.
* At 3 years and over more explanation can be given.

Be A Positive Parent
* Be positive and nurturing towards your child.
* Take a unified approach to parenting.
* Follow the positive belief program.
* Make time to play with your child.

Follow Three Fundamental Rules:
1. Reward good behavior.
2. Ignore bad behavior.
3. Be consistent.

Decide to Take Action
* Set clear behavior boundaries.
* Put in place routines and structure.
* Stick to them.

Follow the Program
* Ask once nicely, ask once firmly.
* Explain the consequences.
* Mean them, and follow through.
* Make sure 'no' means 'no'.
* Use distraction techniques.
* Use role-play for learning.
* Encourage learning from others.
* Use time out.
* Explain why 'sorry' is necessary.
* Forgive with love and cuddles.
* Let it go.

Use Time Out...
* ...as a first approach for entrenched behaviors.
* ...as a last resort for occasional naughtiness.
* ...as an immediate response to violent behavior.
* ...as a period of cooling off if your child has lost control.

Reward Good Behavior
* Create sticker charts for monitoring progress.
* Use treats as positive consequences.
* Reward positive outcomes.
* Be liberal with your praise, love and cuddles.
* Involve your child and play with them often.

Taming Behavior at Other Times
* At bedtimes, follow the peaceful sleep program.
* At mealtimes, follow the friendly food program.
* When away from home, follow the parenting on the move program.
