Genevieve Gorder's barefoot approach to design has given rise to her "resident free spirit" status on Trading Spaces. Her unmistakable allure and charm inspires homeowners to reveal things about themselves — family, friends and memorable moments — prior to designing a room. For Genevieve, inspiration for design is never a question of why — but, why not?
Professional Background:
Genevieve graduated from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan with a B.F.A. in graphic design. An internship at MTV turned into a full-time position, but her love of design drew her to studios in Amsterdam, Barcelona and to Duffy Design, an award-winning studio in New York. Genevieve's artistic side continued to flourish and she quickly went from one- to three-dimensional graphic design, working on everything from corporate identities and packaging to fine arts and fashion.
When the call from Trading Spaces came, Genevieve had yet to see the coolness factor in just designing interiors. For Genevieve, you might say that this was her first "reveal."
Genevieve currently resides in Manhattan and works as a designer on a variety of projects through her company, gg Studios. You can find her work just about anywhere, from a bottle of Tanqueray 10, a line of illustrated greeting cards, a line of blue jeans, to a kitchen in a home near you. Up next? "It's a big surprise," she says.
Personal History:
Born July 26, 1974 and raised in Minneapolis, Minn., Genevieve is the eldest sibling of two younger brothers, Lewis and Adrian.
Design Style:
Experiential, eclectic and whimsical. Genevieve finds inspiration and beauty in everyday life — and then applies it to the rooms she designs for Trading Spaces, often finding one signature object and building her design around it. Some of her "found" inspirational objects include a steaming bowl of Tom-Ka-Gai soup, a trip to Morocco, an artichoke and a Scrabble game board, just to name a few.
The Rooms:
Genevieve's rooms all embody a lasting touch of her free spirit. Her biggest pet peeve is the country that she thinks America is quickly becoming ... "Beigeland, one nation void of color." Some of her most memorable rooms reflect her unusual choices of raw materials. From tin ceilings and broken dish backsplashes to a moss-covered wall, the world is one big art store.
Quotable Genevieve:
"Designing a room comes down to finding out what gives you joy, and I'm there to help make yours visible."
