Los Angeles: Springdale Drive

With one area serving as an exercise room, living room and space for entertaining, this small basement apartment felt sterile and disorganized. Fortunately, designer Laurie Hickson-Smith was big on ideas. The window was given a new treatment with a Roman shade. Both sides of the windows were painted in a Matisse-inspired design. The rest of the walls were painted a bright and cheerful yellow. Carpenter Ty Pennington designed and built shelves to allow for some organizational space, and the closet was revamped to double as an entertainment center for the television.
