Pain in the Neck

Episode: Survival Instinct
City: Savannah, Ga.
Hospital: Memorial Health University Hospital
Doctor Profile: Dr. Michael Millie

During an altercation, a 50-year-old man was stabbed in the neck by his girlfriend. By the time he reached the E.R., the handle of the knife was gone, but the blade was still inside. Even more critical, however, was the bizarre spinal injury he had suffered as a result of the stabbing; the doctors realized he had lost feeling on the left side of his body, and movement on the right. According to Dr. Millie, "It's something that you learn about in medical school, but never think you're ever really going to see."
