Original Airdate: Sept. 21, 1999
City: San Francisco, Calif.
Hospital: Scripps Mercy Hospital
Doctor Profile: Dr. Martin Rossip
Case Study: Cain and Abel

Located in the Mission district, San Francisco General Hospital is the only Level I trauma center in the city. Almost every day, the hospital's emergency department reaches maximum capacity. When all bed space, chair space and hall space is occupied, the ER goes on total divert. That means ambulances must take new patients to other area hospitals … unless a person is critically injured. Many times SFGH (also known as "The Mission") stays on total divert all day, but even so, patients are packed in the rooms and lined up in the halls. Whether these patients are the poor and uninsured citizens of the Tenderloin or wealthy executives from Pacific Heights, the staff at SFGH is dedicated to providing top care.
