Q&A (cont'd)

Q:   Do you have a favorite room or space to decorate?
A:   I enjoy designing bedrooms, because their function is limited to a few things.

Q:   What's it like when viewers recognize you, and what is the nicest remark you've ever heard from a fan?
A:   To my surprise, I was recognized for the first time on the streets of New York City just a couple of days after my first episode aired. An older gentlemen shouted after me, "You're very good on that show, and I should know, I'm a designer. And you're very funny." I was with a friend who is a photographer, and he snapped my picture just as I was processing this new phenomenon.

Q:   What is your favorite While You Were Out design project, and why?
A:   We did an African Savannah room (in Dallas, TX), where we trimmed off the legs of these shiny black end tables (very 1980s) and then covered them in woven sea grass. They became an ottoman/coffee table. It was really simple to do, and the shape and texture were very sexy.

Q:   Most unique item you created for a homeowner on While You Were Out?
A:   In Dallas, I made a faux Murano blown-glass sconce by microwaving gummy bears on a sheet of vinyl. It was a truly crazy idea, but it actually worked.

Q:   Which While You Were Out designer would you like to have redo a space in your home, and why?
A:   Peter BonSey. I don't have a garden or yard, but I'd be interested to see what he'd do with my kitchen. Why? Because I think he's a bit insane.
