Patti is a 38-year-old homemaker and mother of three who is expecting her fourth in a few months. Her husband, Scott, works long hours for a data storage company. The family, along with their collection of antique-style furniture, recently moved into their new house. Between the kids, work and a long commute, Scott unfortunately has little time to settle into the new home. Patti wants to make the bedroom a place where Scott can relax and get a good night's sleep.
So how could Patti manage to get Scott and the kids out of the house? All it took was a little help from Scott's parents, who invited the family to their home three hours away. Patti slyly told Scott she had an old friend visiting and would not be able to go. Posing as a student filmmaker making a documentary on family life, a member of the While You Were Out team was able to film Scott and the kids while they were blissfully unaware of Patti's home-improvement plans.
The biggest problem Patti and Scott have with the new home is just how out-of-place the antique-style furniture seems in their new house. The antique bed frame is a pain because it's just too small for tall Scott to fit in comfortably. Also, they have not had any time to paint, so the walls throughout the house are all white. Patti wants to give Scott what they both need in their bedroom — color and comfort.
Enter designer Stephen Saint-Onge. His idea for Patti and Scott's bedroom is to transform it into a warm, seaside bed-and-breakfast. Stephen chooses to paint stripes on the walls and paint the existing furniture in one of Scott's favorite colors, blue. To make the bed easier to sleep in for Scott, Stephen decides to dismantle the antique frame and create a totally new headboard that extends up to the ceiling. For a cozier atmosphere, a window seat is crafted, with storage space hidden on either end by a charming picket-fence gate.
Patti tells host Anna Bocci that she is unsure whether she likes the blue stripes on the walls or her newly painted blue furniture. As it turns out, even though it's Scott's favorite color, Patti dislikes blue. Concerned, Stephen begins to rethink his plans. Will Patti be satisfied?
Finally, with moments to spare before Scott is due home, what happens when a miscalculation renders the window seat too large for the wall? With it being such an integral part of the room's design, will Scott and the kids come home to a room still in the midst of being put together? Watch and find out.
