Laura is hoping to bring her mother, Sandra, some good news and show her a good time during a long, sad period in her life. Sandra's father passed away a year ago, and this has affected her greatly. He was a real pillar in the community as well as a close father. As another stroke of bad luck, her mother was injured in a car accident soon after. So, overall Sandra has been having a bad time of it.

The bedroom could do with a makeover. It is a key space in the house, but has never benefited from much design attention. The room serves many purposes. It doubles up as a computer room for the kids' homework, and a lot of socializing goes on there too. It needs some serious work to make it suitable for all these other activities.

There is another surprise in store for Sandra. Laura's boyfriend, Tim, who she thinks is still in Afghanistan where he serves in the armed forces, will make a surprise visit. Sandra is especially close to Tim, and it will make her year when she finds him standing in uniform in her new bedroom when she returns.
