Clinton's Top 5 Gifts for Dads

My dad and I have a tradition: On Father’s Day I give him cash. Some people think that’s not very thoughtful, but I must disagree. I know how much he enjoys any article of clothing with the words "Harley Davidson" on it — he’s in LOVE with his bike, a Heritage Soft Tail — and he knows how I’ve made a career out of throwing logo t-shirts into a trash can. It’s our little compromise and it makes us happy.

I realize that might not work for everyone, so here are some suggestions for your Father:

none
If your dad doesn’t splurge on himself, get him some … Cashmere!

This is the present I would want most if I were a dad (even though I splurge on myself fairly regularly). A lightweight V-neck sweater looks good on any man. And get it in a color he wouldn’t normally buy for himself. A few compliments from you plus that decadent softness next to his skin and he’ll be hooked!
none
If your dad’s a suit-and-tie kinda guy, get him a … Custom made shirt.

A custom suit might be too expensive and the tie, well, that’s a little cliché. But a custom button-front shirt hits just the right note. You can probably get one for about $150. A little pricey, but worth it because dad can choose the fabric, the color of the buttons, the color and style of the monogram, the style of the collar and it will be the best fit of his life. I got my first custom shirt a few months ago and it rocks!
none
If your dad spends a ton of time in the car, get him a … Pair of driving shoes.

These make a huge difference when pedal pushing — especially if dad's got a manual transmission or tends to get stuck in traffic. Compared to the average loafer, driving shoes have grippier soles, which generally extend up the back of the shoe. Plus, the insole will be better cushioned. Dad will have happier feet than those animated penguins.
none
If your dad has a 'do from the '70s, get him a … Gift certificate for a high-end salon haircut.

Most dads I know tend to get stuck in a haircut rut and will say things like, “A hundred dollars for a haircut! Over my dead body!” That’s the only reason I can think of to explain some of the outdated ’dos I see all over the place. Maybe if it’s your money, he’ll let himself get snipped by someone under the age of 73 who knows that thinning hair looks best when it’s short, not extending from one side of the head to the other.
none
If your dad loves his gizmos (and maybe his new grandchildren), get him a … Digital photo keychain.

I just met a guy who had one of these and I was pretty jealous. It’s a cool, modern, slightly techy way for dad to carry around pictures — instead of stuffing them in a wallet so one of his butt cheeks look three times bigger than the other.
none
But more than anything, be sure to remember to tell dad how much you love him — even if you secretly wish he wore more cashmere and less stuff that says "Harley-Davidson".

All the best —
Clinton
