"Iron Man" - What's in an "iron-rich" diet, and is that a good diet for kids?

For young children, iron deficiency anemia is the most common nutrition problem. Iron needs are highest during periods of rapid growth, such as childhood and adolescence. That's why children need to be screened for anemia at their regular checkups. Children need enough iron to support growth, replace normal iron loss, and produce energy for learning and play. To help your kids get the most benefits from iron rich foods, pair foods for optimal absorption as follow:

  • Peanut butter sandwich with orange juice

  • Ground beef with a whole wheat roll

  • Pork tenderloin with bean soup

  • Strawberries with oatmeal

  • Grapefruit with bran cereal

  • Chicken with brown rice

  • Sirloin strips with spinach salad
